There are several things that must be done to have a successful Eagle Project. It would be best to review this entire document before proceeding onto the project planning. If you understand what you will have to write about, it will be easier to gather the information as it occurrs. The full document and an example eagle project can be found *** HERE ***
Step One:.GET A NOTEBOOK AND KEEP TRACK OF EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO FOR THE PROJECT! The way that hours are tallied, if you speak with another person about your project for one hours, that counts for two hours of project time. Four people talking for an hour, four hours. WRITE YOUR TIMES DOWN, WITH DATES AND WHOM YOU SPOKE WITH! You will need a project, for which, you can account for 150 hours, about 100 of which have to be on the project. Step Two: Look for your project. Try to find something you like doing and make a project out of it. Example: Cataloging historic houses if you like working with a computer. Trail-clearing is good if you like doing things out of doors. Ask your troop leaders for suggestions. Sometimes there are projects that the troop has been been requrested to do or made available for Eagle projects. Step Three: Write up a proposal including what you plan to do, who will benefit, the specific details listed in the TRAIL TO EAGLE Packet and have Mr. Milligan and Mr. Cherny (and Mr. Hall if it involves building something) review it. If it is acceptable, you will need to write it in the TRAIL TO EAGLE packet and collect all four signatures. (Mr. Milligan, Mr. Cherny, Your sponser, and Mr. Koch.) Make sure that you write it neatly so that it can be read. As an option, you can type out your proposal and attached it to your Trail to Eagle packet. If you do this, make a note in the proposal space that states that your statement is attached. Step Four: Notify the troop of the scope of your project, the date, time, rain date, and materials volunteers need to bring. Give the troop at least a month’s notice if possible. Step Five: Make sure that you take before, and after pictures. Also keep track of any money spent, any donations made, and all materials used. Step Six: Keep track of what happens at what times during the project so that the details can be included in the write-up. Don’t forget the after pictures. Note any changes that had to be done. Step Seven: Get your final signatures and finish the write up. If you decide to include some of the information required in the Trail to Eagle Workbook in your formal write up, write in the section of the Trail to Eagle packet where in the formal write-up the information can be found. Eagle Application Get the current list of your merit badge information from Mr. Cherny. Complete the "Application for Eagle Scout" making sure that you use the current form (April 1, 1999) and written in all the dates. It's usually best to use the Merit Badges that are oldest i.e. earned first on the form. If a later badge is used, the sequence might be dirsrupted and a badge might be left out that was used for Star or Life and the form will be rejected. The Eagle Application Form with all signatures (Mr. Milligan, Mr. Koch, and Mr. Hall) and Item 6 "Statement of Life's Purpose" MUST be submitted to the scout office and have their signature for approval BEFORE the board of review can be requested. Copies of all letters of reference must be included in the packet for the Board of Review. If the references are not in hand, the Board cannot sign the application. The actual references are not needed for submittal of the Eagle application but should be requested no later than the date that the Eagle application is submitted to the scout office. |
